Many general practitioners aged over forty five (45) express an interest in working in Australia. They are worried that they will be not be able to obtain permanent residency. They are also concerned about gaining Australian citizenship.
This blog outlines the route to permanent residency. It’s available and a lot more straightforward than you’d think.
Most Australian general practices initially sponsor overseas doctors via a temporary visa; the Skills in Demand Subclass 482. Importantly, this visa does not have an age limit; so individuals over 45 years of age are eligible to apply. Holders of the 482 visa can travel freely to and from Australia, include family members on their visas, and it allows spouses to work or study without restriction.
Temporary Transition Stream
The 482 visa features a ‘transition stream’, which allows medical practitioners over 45 years of age to pursue permanent residency after working for at least two years in their nominated occupation.
