Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and a beautiful city combining distinguished old buildings with a vibrant culture.
Hobart is a beguiling mix of old and new with converted warehouses and factories cheek by jowl with modern apartment blocks; and colonial workers’ cottages adjacent to refurbished mansions.
The Hobart Lifestyle…
Founded in 1804 as a penal colony, Hobart is Australia’s second-oldest capital city after Sydney and has a colonial feel with its many gracious buildings along the Derwent River estuary. Waterfront living is more affordable in Hobart than on ‘the mainland’ as the rest of Australia is called.
The locals love their festivals, which are held throughout the year with themes ranging from food and wine to choral music and the arts – and MONA Museum, a short ferry ride up the river, offers free entry for locals.
The city has a mild, temperate oceanic climate, but snow can often be seen on the peak of Mount Wellington, which overlooks the city and offers bushwalking and mountain bike riding leisure opportunities.
While Hobart used to be favoured by an older demographic, it is today a great favourite with young couples and families, tree changers and there are many university students. There is also a wide choice of excellent public and private schools.
